We Made These People Eat Textured Vegetable Protein, And They Hated It

A lot of frozen meals use bizarre ingredients that you’d never find in your kitchen. While these ingredients are technically safe to eat, they’re never included for your benefit — they’re thickeners, extenders, or chemicals intended to make the food cheaper or longer-lasting.

Textured vegetable protein, which is left over when you extract soybean oil from soybeans, is often used as a cheap meat substitute. What does the stuff taste like on its own? Studio@Gizmodo partnered with the comedy video team that made Chad Vader to help us find out. Watch this video to see what happens when people try to eat raw TVP. Hint: It gets weird.
